The 90s blowout is one of the biggest hair trends making a comeback. Big, bouncy, glossy hair defined by voluminous roots is what people are obsessing over. The 90s Blowout perfectly balances between effortless and chic, lasts for days, and works beautifully with almost any haircut - from a sleek bob to shoulder-grazing layers or long, flowing lengths. The best part? You don’t need a salon appointment to achieve it. With the right technique and tools, you can recreate the smooth, bouncy blowout look right at home.
The Prep
-
Start with freshly washed, detangled hair
-
Apply heat protection before styling. Noru Thermal Shield protects hair up to 230°C while delivering lightweight hydration. Once applied, you can layer any additional styling products you prefer
-
Rough dry your hair until it’s about 80% dry. If using the Noru Sonic Hair Dryer, select high speed with medium heat.
-
Use sectioning clips to divide your hair into four sections. Clip the two front (top) sections up and out of the way, and bring the two bottom sections forward so each rests over a shoulder
The Technique
Start with the bottom sections of your hair and further divide them into smaller strands for easier styling. When using the Noru Sonic Hair Dryer, set it to medium wind speed and high heat.
Place a large round brush underneath the section near the roots, to create lift and volume. Position the hair dryer above the strand and pointing downward to smooth the cuticle and help reduce frizz. Begin brushing from the roots to create lift and volume, following the brush with the dryer as you move down the hair shaft. When you reach the ends, rotate the brush inward and keep the dryer on the section briefly to shape a soft, curled finish.
Once the strand is fully styled, loop the hair back up toward the scalp and secure it with a clip or pin to cool - this helps set the volume and shape of the blowout. Continue this process until you finish through all four sections.
For bangs or face-framing layers, place the brush behind the bangs at the roots and blow dry upward while lifting slightly back to create volume. As you reach the ends, rotate the brush and focus the airflow on the tips to create a soft bend. Once styled, roll the section back toward the scalp and pin it backwards to cool so the shape sets in place.
When your pinned sections have fully cooled, remove the clips and gently release each section. Shake everything out with your fingers, and you’re left with big, bouncy, voluminous hair. Finish with a little hairspray, and you’ve got your 90s Blowout at home!
The Refresh
Another reason to love this classic blowout technique? With a few simple tricks, it’s easy to extend this style through your next wash day. To refresh the next day, add dry shampoo if your roots are oily. To restore shine and smooth any overnight flyaways use the Hot Brush attachment from the 5-in-1 Multistyler. Brush through each section, curving the brush at the ends to create soft bends. The tourmaline-coated barrel helps smooth frizz, enhance shine, and style hair more gently with reduced heat damage.
